The Last "Last Week in Woodturning"
Yep, Last Week in Woodturning is shutting down. Had a severe Windows problem that I couldn't recover from, and had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. I've been reinstalling applications for a week now. The effort to rebuild all my infrastructure to keep my database going is too much for me, at least at the moment. But....I intend to start making real woodturning videos again soon!

Woodturning: FRANKENBOWL! Maple Burl Cap
Переглядів 10 тис.2 роки тому
This beautiful burl cap is big leaf maple. I purchased it on eBay for $25, and I think it was well worth the price. To keep the excellent texture of the top of the cap, I turned a small recess in the center of the top. Then I finished it with Watco Wiping Polyurethane. This large sycamore log is about ten months old or thereabouts. I got it from a homeowner in Rockville, MD. It's about 14 1/2" (36cm) long and 12" (30cm) in diameter. It's showing some cracks near the ends of the log, but I'll be shortening the log and hopefully that will remove the cracks. As I turn, I find more splitting inside and I reinforce those area with thin CA glue. In vain! Before I c...

From an ambrosia maple log, I turn a medium-sized hollow form. The opening at the top is about 1 3/4" (44mm). The finish is Watco oil-base wiping varnish. During the hollowing, I use four or five different hollowing tools, including a ring tool, a hook tool, a Sorby Hollow Master, and others. This bowl of ambrosia maple (very little ambrosia, I'm afraid) was made from a maple tree I had taken down from my backyard a couple of months ago. Due to various mistakes on my part, the bowl turned out quite a bit smaller than I had intended. It has a dyed rim on it, with a pattern cut in with a Sorby spiralling tool. This is also the first project where I've used a hook tool and a Longworth ...

      If I recall correctly, Titebond 3 is significantly more expensive that regular Titebond. So, being economically minded (i.e., cheap), I didn’t test it. 😃

      To answer your question, the blank stays in the drying box until the moisture level is about the same as the ambient moisture level of a chunk of wood sitting in my shop. Or until the day to day weight loss is about 3/10 of an ounce.

    Excellent and really subjective review, thank you Really pleased to hear your comments, as I ordered one this morning to replace a really old ( and somewhat temperamental ) Record RP3000 chuck. I would really have preferred to get an SC3 as my lathe is a lightweight Record Coronet from way back with a 3/4in x 16tpi thread, but the SC3 has a fixed thread size, so not future proof , and if I do get a new lathe, it will certainly have a bigger shaft thread, probably the M33 that's on the chuck body. Record do turn out good stuff, I changed the bearings and belt on the lathe today after 30 years of use, all of which were in fact in perfect order.

      Even if you double or triple seal the ends, a log left outdoors won't last very long without developing some splits. If you're leaving them outside for sitting, I'd say don't bother sealing them.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning 9 місяців тому

      I’ve never used unboiled linseed oil. What I’ve read about is that it never dries. Sounds like you’re getting better results than that.

    • @thomasgronek6469
      @thomasgronek6469 9 місяців тому

      thanks for responding. The big fear of oily rags, this is it, , , it does polymerize, and that is what causes spontaneous combustion. I takes forever to dry, it does eventually cure. I concocted a multi-ingredient finish which included unboiled linseed, bees wax, and shellac that took 3 weeks to harden, that was 8 years ago, and it still looks fine, and is quite resistant to water and other everyday use ( it is a saya I made for my guyoto). so it is exposed to relatively adverse conditions@@RickTurnsWoodturning
